Are Grapefruits Good for You?

The grapefruit is a citrus fruit with many proven health benefits. In certain situations, however, it can also pose serious health risks.

Nutrition

    Although nutrition varies somewhat based on the variety of grapefruit, all grapefruits are low in calories and high in fiber. They're an excellent source of vitamin C. Pink and red grapefruits are also rich in antioxidants, which boost your immune system and help ward off chronic diseases such as cancer and arthritis.

Weight Loss

    Researchers have found that an increased consumption of grapefruits may aid weight loss. One theory is that a grapefruit has unique properties that burn fat, while another theory suggests that consuming any low-calorie, high-fiber food will help people lose weight.

Disease Prevention

    Research has linked the consumption of grapefruits to lower rates of asthma, heart disease and cancer. Grapefruits may also help lower cholesterol, although it's unclear if this is due to their high level of antioxidants or another reason.

Medicinal Properties

    Naringenin--a compound of grapefruit and other citrus fruits--has been used to dramatically reduce the spread of the hepatitis C virus. Medical researchers are investigating ways to create a naringenin drug that could be used to treat hepatitis C and other medical conditions.

Effect on Medications

    Consuming a grapefruit or its juice while taking certain medications may prevent the medication from breaking down properly in the intestines, possibly leading to serious side effects. Always check with a doctor when starting a new medication to see if it is one affected by grapefruit.

Heartburn Risk

    Like other acidic foods, grapefruits can trigger heartburn. People who are prone to heartburn should avoid eating grapefruit.
