Grapefruit Facts

Grapefruit is a citrus fruit commonly consumed as part of the breakfast meal. It has a distinctive tart taste that diners frequently tame with a sprinkling of sugar or salt. Does this Spark an idea?

History

Unlike all other citrus fruits, grapefruit did not originate in Old World Europe. Its roots are traceable to the Caribbean where it was first cultivated in the late 18th century. Although not confirmed, studies indicate it is likely a natural hybrid resulting from the pomelo mating with another unknown citrus fruit, according to the Food Reference website.

Current Cultivation

Shortly after its introduction to the Caribbean, the grapefruit started to be cultivated in Florida. Florida currently grows about a third of the world's grapefruit, with the United States as a whole producing around 60 percent of the world's crop. It grows in clumps, like grapes, which gave the fruit its name, and is always handpicked.

Nutrients

A half grapefruit or 8 ounces of grapefruit juice provides at least 100% of the recommended daily value of Vitamin C. It can help the body absorb iron and is rich in potassium and pectin.
